With the bulbs fading and the herbaceous border growing in leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is approaching. Sowing and planting out bedding can begin in some areas of the UK, depending on regional weather variations. It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer temperatures this month brings.

Top 10 jobs this month

Watch out for late frosts. Protect tender plants
Earth up potatoes, and promptly plant any still remaining
Plant out summer bedding at the end of the month (except in cold areas)
Collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for irrigation
Regularly hoe off weeds
Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm days
Mow lawns weekly
Check for nesting birds before clipping hedges
Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs
Watch out for viburnum beetle and lily beetle grubs

I love this time of the year the Bluebells are out in abundance, carpets of the beautiful blue flowers can be seen in our wooded areas and in some places you can even go on a Bluebell Walk and have a cream tea after, lovely!!

Also you can hear the insistent tap tap tap of the woodpecker, although this could possibly be our Yard Manager Gary, working hard in the Green Shed!!

Talking of our Yard staff, we now have an assistant for Gary, turning out hundreds of jumbo bags of Organic Norfolk Topsoil, which seems to be our best seller at the moment.

gabions rock being used on the hugh refebishment of Thames barrier, working with Volker Stevin we successfully supplied all the limestone gabion rock for the project.
